“Fueling Passions: A Mechanic’s Odyssey from Stations to Family Tales”

“Family has always been at the core of my life. My name is Bill, and at 72, I’ve had a very fulfilling journey. I come from a very strict Irish Catholic family, being the third oldest among nine kids, where each of us received equal love. We weren’t affluent, nor were we destitute. However, growing up in a large family, certain traditions were expected—church every Sunday without fail, confessions every week, and a menu that featured fish on Fridays, liver on Wednesdays, and beef stew on Mondays.”

In the bustling world of engines and grease, my journey began at an Exxon service station. Starting as a mechanic apprentice, I learned the basics—oil changes, tire fixes, and fuel pumping. The thrill of the trade consumed me, and soon, I was dismantling engines and transmissions.

My boss recognized my passion and nudged me to spread my wings. That led me to a dealership, where I immersed myself in the intricacies of Datsun, eager to absorb every iota of knowledge about these foreign cars.

Amidst this mechanical whirlwind, fate intervened at a neighborhood restaurant. A particular waitress caught my eye, though she initially seemed disinterested. Persistence paid off, and soon, we were dating, navigating life’s twists and turns together.

The turning point arrived when I planned to ask her to marry me. But fate had a prank in store—the day I planned to propose, my beloved Camaro vanished. Lost in concern for my car, the proposal took a backseat. Nonetheless, in ’79, we exchanged vows and began our journey as a married couple.

Our family grew with the arrival of our daughter in ’83 and our son in ’85. Guided by our Irish Catholic upbringing, we instilled in them the values passed down to us.

Our children’s journey was a testament to their dedication. Though they excelled in sports, they kept it humble among friends, fearing that revealing their true potential might distance them. Their success fills us with immense pride.

Together, we explored the vastness of the United States, never looking back but always forging ahead. Our family story embodies a blend of mechanics, love, tradition, and the pursuit of excellence—a legacy we continue to cherish.
